After your surgery, you will need to make changes to your eating patterns. Our team will assist you with this process. It is very important that you follow their recommendations and instructions immediately after the operation.
The size of your gastric reservoir is approximately 1 ounce or one to two tablespoons. Your initial capacity will be somewhat limited, so be patient. You may find that 2 or 3 tablespoons of food will fill you up. This is to be expected. You will also notice that you can eat more of one type of food than another, which is also normal. Over time, your gastric pouch will stretch; approximately six months after the surgery, it will be able to accommodate 8 ounces to 1 cup. In the long term, your reservoir may hold 8 to 12 ounces or 1 to 1½ cups. Therefore, the amount of food you can consume at one time is limited.
The surgery is designed to restrict solids, not liquids, so the liquids you drink will not make you feel full. You should also avoid drinking liquids during or immediately after meals, as it will flush the food through the gastric pouch quickly and therefore not provide a prolonged sense of fullness, which helps you eat less. However, staying hydrated and drinking plenty of water throughout the day is very important. You will need to learn to eat and chew slowly.
One of the most common changes reported by bariatric patients is the concept of wasting food. After surgery, your eyes and mind still function the same way they did before. However, due to the new stomach pouch, you will feel satisfied with much less. It is necessary to pay attention to your body’s signals of fullness and not to your eyes, which still see food on the plate.
