Remember that feeling nervous or anxious on the day of surgery is normal. It is important to be aware of the complications that can arise from the procedure, most of which occur within the first few days after the surgery, so there is no need to worry.
Remember that a week before the surgery, you should follow a strict diet, and afterward, you must attend a consultation with your treating physician to be informed about what you need to bring on the day of the surgery.
You should also remember not to eat anything after midnight on the day before the surgery.
Why is this recommendation made to patients? One of the complications resulting from having a full stomach during surgery is vomiting, which can lead to aspiration; this means that food from the stomach is regurgitated back into the esophagus and enters the respiratory tract, causing airway obstruction and pneumonia. For this reason, you should avoid consuming any food before surgery, including chewing gum.
Once you have followed the recommendations, you will be ready to go to the preoperative area, where the nursing staff will dress you and prepare you for surgery. At this stage, all the hospital admission paperwork is completed, including the informed consent, in case complications arise and to ensure you are aware of the risks involved in undergoing surgery. Once this process is complete, you will be sent to the operating room to begin the surgery. On the operating table, you will be given intravenous medication to help you relax, and then anesthesia will be administered.
When you wake up, you will already be in the recovery room, and within a few hours, you will be able to receive visits from your family. During this stage, you will be given pain medications, and it is recommended that you walk around the room within the first 5 hours after the procedure, as this helps prevent blood clots and also helps alleviate shoulder pain associated with the CO2 that remains in the abdomen after surgery.
Additionally, it is important to follow a liquid-based diet, including purees, and make lifestyle changes that promote effective weight loss.
Recovery from gastric sleeve surgery can be painful for some, while others may not experience as much discomfort, so each person experiences pain differently, and pain medications may be more effective for one individual than another. Within a few hours, you will begin to feel a sense of restriction and the change that your body demands, so it is advisable to prepare yourself to start a more balanced diet.
A close follow-up with a nutritionist and psychologist is essential for the success of the surgery, as well as scheduled check-up appointments with your surgeon to ensure everything is going well, request control lab tests, verify your nutritional status, and assess weight loss.
